2012 is becoming an exciting year! I am due to have a baby at the beginning of May! I am still booking clients during that time, but will be taking on limited sessions so that I can still maintain the level of attention I like to give my clients. I look forward to a wonderful year with all of you!

: The D Family :

I wasn’t sure we were going to fit Sofi’s session in before the evening summer thunderstorm rolled through, but we made it just in time!

Although no other members of the D family are pictured here, I became friends with Sofi’s mom last winter and I also had the pleasure of meeting Sofi’s aunt and grandmother who joined us for our photo shoot at the park.  It was a girls day out!

Except for the unbearable Georgia heat and humidity, we all had a great time making our way around Sims Lake Park for Sofi’s session. Sofi was so willing to be helpful, even when it meant going from rocks, to fence, to lake, to stairs.  She was so good at listening and smiling that we worked our way around the park in no time at all.

As Sofi was doing a quick change at our last stop before moving to the playground, her mom reminded Sofi of the balancing ropes she had loved so much the last time.  Sofi’s face was blank for a minute until her mom described then again, and then her face broke out into a huge grin.  A grin I hadn’t seen much of during all those sweet smiles she was giving me!  There’s nothing quite like seeing a kid’s face break out into a truly joyful grin.  I couldn’t wait to get to the playground and see some more of those smiles…so Sofi and I went ahead of her family and skipped our way there.  And it’s a good thing we got there fast.  The sky was already turning dark and the thunder was rolling in.  We had about 15 minutes on the playground before the rain started pouring!

Can you tell that she was pretty excited to get to the playground? Her feet aren’t even touching the ground!

I’m so glad we got our session in before the rains came.  Sofi has a natural way of looking like a the essence of childhood in some shots and a beautiful china doll in others.  Gorgeous!

Thanks to Sofi and all the ladies from the D family for a great day at the park!

: The W Family : Mark at 8 Months

I adore this sweet boy!  What a wonder to watch him grow before my eyes…and my lens!

I love taking pictures at this age.  Babies are still so rolly and extremely smiley.  Mark was no exception!  He ate the camera up:)  It took me quite awhile to narrow down from all the portraits I took because he’s just so cute!

I can’t wait to get Mark’s one year portraits in another 4 months!

Adorable! (And very nice photography!)

: The (Extended) W Family :

Earlier this month I got an email from a client of mine, Cathryn, asking me to join her for a photography play date at the park.  This woman has a very big heart.  Not only did she convince her brother and his wife to let their four kids stay with her (in addition to three kids she already calls her own), but she decided to surprise them with some portraits of their kids!

And was I willing to take on a photo shoot with seven kids?  You betcha!  And I had a blast:)

The oldest cousin, Collin, was way too cool for me.  That happens around the age of 10.  For some reason, with kids this age, I stop being funny and start being weird.  You can tell from the first shot below that he was not best pleased to have me stalking him with my camera.  That’s the look that says “I’m smiling but I really hate you for it.”  It’s ok though…I won him over eventually.  I knew I stood a chance when I saw him cooing over his baby cousin, Mark.  I love watching the cool kids show their sweet side.

Collin was still a tough kid to break, though.  He was the only one who didn’t crack a smile during our “Make ‘Em Laugh” game where the rest of the family tries to get the person in the hot seat to smile.  But, a funny thing happens when you’re trying desperately not to smile…the real smiles manage to sneak out when the photographer finally declares you the winner of “Make ‘Em Laugh” and then says you have to give a smile anyway for the picture.   I love his real sweet smile in the second shot below.

Buford PhotographerThe second oldest cousin, Camden loved the camera and was happy to play and to be caught in the lens.  I got a bunch of wonderful happy pictures like this one the first one below.  But sometimes, the pictures I like the best aren’t the smiling one.  My favorite portrait of Camden, and one of my favorite all-time portraits to date, is the second one below.  With that red hair and those amazing brown eyes, he is handsomely stunning.

Rylyn, the oldest girl, was a firecracker!  She was a little unsure of me at first, but once I won her over (which didn’t take long), she couldn’t wait to be in front of the camera.  She told me all kids of stories and wanted nothing more than to play, play, play!  Rylyn was so much fun and a joy to photograph.

Flower Branch PhotographersThe youngest of the family, Mackenna, was an absolute doll.  She was a little shy to begin with, but once she saw that her siblings approved, she had fun swinging and smiling at me.  Or maybe it was funny to see me lying on the ground right below her swinging feet that convinced her that I was ok.  Either way, after she warmed up to me, I got tons of smiles!  What a cutie!

I even got some cute shots of Cathryn’s kids while we were there.  Poor baby Mark was confined to the car seat most of the time.  But it’s ok…he got a turn at his very own photo session that weekend!  (Stay tuned for his portraits to be posted soon.)

We even managed to get a shot of all the kids together.  Many thanks to Cathryn for her fabulous entertaining!  I’m posting several because when I look at the series of them together, I can’t help but laugh.

I’m not sure what their favorite part of the afternoon was, but the best part for me was getting tackled by all the kiddos!  I think I enjoy it because it means that they’re all having a great time and that, despite being the photographer, I’ve won them over.  Here’s one of the last things I saw before they took me out!

Gwinnett PhotographersThanks Cathryn, for inviting me along to a wonderful afternoon in the park with your family.  I had a fabulous time:)

A Bygone Era

As a creative type, my brain is bombarded daily with thoughts of new ideas I want to try during a photo shoot.  That’s why I designed the Make the Art program here at Shinn Shots Photography.

I came up with the concept for my most recent Make the Art session when I was taking a lighting course.  Controlling light affords all types of creative outcomes in photographs.  We were practicing with hard light, which is often a trademark of the 1950′s style portraits.  I wanted to chance to try out this lighting technique while creating some stylized portraits.  As soon as I came up with the idea, I knew just the man for the job.  Jake.

The Shot I Envisioned

Jake is a gregarious 13-year-old who is completely relaxed in front of the camera.  Couple that with the fact that he can definitely pull off the “smooth” look, and I knew he’d be right for these pictures.

I originally planned on just taking studio shots with Jake, but a few weeks before our shoot I drove past this old gas station on one corner and an old barn on the other corner of Peachtree Parkway and Mathis Airport Road in Cumming.  I just about ran the red light as I looked back to check out these abandoned buildings.  They were PERFECT!  I tracked down the owner of the land and asked permission to shoot there.  Thankfully, he obliged a crazy photographer and agreed to let me shoot on his land.

To get the right lighting, we needed it to be dark for the studio shots and late evening for the location shots.  It worked out well that my clients are late-night people like me because we ended up shooting until 11 pm!  We met at 7pm on location and spent the next half hour trying to figure out how to tie and tie!  I’m definitely adding that to my list of things to memorize.  Who knew it could be so complicated.  But, between an iPhone, YouTube, and vague memories, Rebecca (Jake’s mom) figured it out.

Jake's Favorite Shot

Jake and I then proceeded to distract cars driving by with our photo shoot on the side of the road and ended our location shoot by braving snakes in the tall grass next to the barn.  Jake was awesome.  Completely debonair.  Ok, he admitted he didn’t feel that way standing on the side of the road.  But in his custom suit, well-tied tie, and cool hat….he definitely came across as legend… <wait for it> …dary!

As the sun was setting, we headed back towards Jake’s house to set up the studio.  Once Jake was in his element (and didn’t have people staring at him as they drove by), his personality completely came out.  What’s that phrase my grandmother used to say?  He could talk the hind leg off a mule?  (That’s said in complete affection…and I’m not saying anything he doesn’t already know;))  I love the fact that he talks because it keeps him relaxed and it keeps me from having to think about what to say to fill the silence.  We make a good team.  Not only that, but Jake is a complete natural in front of the camera.  I got so many shots that I didn’t even plan on because he just hangs out and creates these great poses while he tells his tall tales.

I loved this shoot because it was one of the first times that a concept in my head came out just as I imagined it would in the picture.  It’s amazing to see your vision come to life.  Thanks to Jake, Rebecca, and Bryan for working with me to make it happen!

I hope Jake likes his pictures (even though he’s not in his typical t-shirt and jeans), but even more important to me was what he said to his mom at the end of our 4 hour photo shoot:  “She’s just not like other photographers.”  Music to my ears.  What’s the point of taking pictures if it’s not fun?

Do You Remember Turning 7?

I’ve been so busy taking pictures lately that I haven’t had time to post them!

A couple weekends ago, I got to take pictures for Sloane’s seventh birthday party.  Everyone celebrated at Duncan Creek Park and had a blast!  I don’t know the last time you were at a seven-year-old’s birthday party, but they’re pretty fun.

For the first half of the party, the kids decided to make up a game…unwittingly starring me as the bad guy!  Sloane rallied her friends into avoiding the photographer.  It went something like this:

Kids: “Shh…Shh!  Do you see her anywhere?  Did we lose her?  I don’t see her.  Maybe….Agghhh!  There she is!  Run!  RUN!!!

Meanwhile, I felt like a nature photographer stalking my subject.  I was lurking behind playground equipment, darting across open spaces, and peaking around benches while trying to stay hidden.  I’m sure the rest of the parents at the park enjoyed my antics.  Actually, so did I!  I’ve always been fascinated by the games kids invent and it’s even better when I get to play!  Besides, having the birthday girl stop playing to stand still and smile at me is just too easy and way too boring.

Eventually Sloane got tired of dodging me and started to move slower…which is helpful when you’re a lot older than 7 like I am!  I did manage to get some great shots of her smiling.   Who cares if I had to lie down in the middle of an angled, spinning piece of playground equipment just to prove to her that I was cool enough to take her picture.  It worked.

By the end of the party, some of the kids (who obviously missed the memo about the first game) were actually trying to always be in front of my camera.  The best part?  They were boys. How many boys do you know that actually want to be in a picture?  My bet is that they didn’t actually want to have pictures taken of them…they just liked the challenge of ruining my shot.  I always love a good challenge:)

It’s my fault that it started anyway.  I told this young man that I remembered him from the last birthday party I shot for the family.  This kid is a character and the picture below completely captures him.  The image has been stuck in my head ever since I took it.  I guess he took my compliment as a challenge.

Despite all the games, (and the noon-day sun) I got some great shots at the party.  I did get the requisite cake and presents pictures, but those aren’t the ones I’m posting.  Typically at a birthday party I love taking color pictures.  There’s so many colors bursting out from balloons, decorations, presents, and favors.  But for some reason, most of my favorite shots from this birthday look gorgeous in black and white.  That’s one of the wonderful things about photography – you can plot and plan your shot, but sometimes the images still surprise you.
